Assessment of the Implementation of SDG 16.10.02 on Access to Information in Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe

Access to information is a fundamental human right closely tied to freedom of expression and media freedom, recognized by various international organizations, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 16 specifically emphasizes the importance of creating inclusive and just societies with access to justice and transparent institutions.

The Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) led a research project from January 2021 to April 2021 called ‘Assessment of the Implementation of SDG Indicator 16.10.02 on Access to Information in Four African Countries.’ This project, funded by Free Press Unlimited, aimed to evaluate the implementation of national right to information (RTI) legislation in Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe.

These assessments aimed to supplement the Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) submitted by target countries to the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). The goal was to ensure that challenges faced by journalists, civil society, and citizens in accessing information under legal provisions were addressed in discussions at the 2021 HLPF and 2021 World Press Freedom Day (WPFD). This initiative underscores the significance of transparency and access to information in achieving sustainable development goals.
