Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) joined the Ministry of ICT and National guidance, and Twaweza Uganda, on 25th July 2024, on a study tour of The Gambian government delegation on the implementation of the Access to Information ACT in Kamuli District, Uganda.
Uganda adopted the Access to Information Act in 2005, becoming one of the first countries in East Africa to establish a legal framework for access to information. Other countries include; South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Nigeria,
Among others, AFIC stressed the importance of establishing systems for proactive disclosure, receiving and responding to information requests, processing internal appeals as well as capturing statistics and annual reporting.
The organisation also emphasised the importance of government agencies in collaborating with CSOs on implementing promotional measures such as awareness raising and capacity building.
AFIC was heavily involved with the Gambia Press Union in advocating for the passage of an access to information legislation and it is pleasing that the Government of The Gambia is committed to implementing this law.
